In the clinical picture of arterial hypertension, often abbreviated to hypertension or high blood pressure, the blood pressure of the arterial vascular system is chronically elevated over the long term. Temporary and short-term increases in blood pressure, e.g. due to illness or the intake of medication, are not called hypertension.
