Healthy Sitting – How does it work?
The back hurts, the neck is tensed up, the head feels heavy. Does this sound familiar to you? You are not alone. Back pain is a wide spread disease. What is the reason however for this specific discomfort?
As one of the main reasons, experts state a rigid posture and a lack of movement while sitting. These lead to a constant strain of back muscles, to a bad supply of the spinal discs and hence to back pain. Not only adults, but more and more children as well are affected by this symptom. The natural conception of the human body is not suitable for sitting, but instead for moving. Yet we cannot avoid to sit the better part of the day due to our school and working environment.
Therefore ergonomists, physicians, and scientists recommend moving while sitting for example in the context of “Aktion Gesunder Rücken (AGR e.V.) Why?
Sitting on a moving surface leads to a so called active-dynamic sitting. It means that frequent compensation movements cause the participating muscle groups to flex and relax. Tissue and joints remain in action. The spinal discs are supplied with nutrients. This process takes place mainly unconsciously, that means without any deliberate control being necessary.
Dr. med. Gerrit Sommer:
“Because of their functional design and dynamic adjustment the devices of the Healthy Sitting Line by TOGU help to prevent back pain. By sitting and moving at the same time, the muscles that stabilize the torso are activated, the balance is being trained and a false posture can be avoided.”
Over all this has the following positive effects on your health: A support of your blood circulation. More flexible spinal discs because of a bettersupply with nutrients. Strengthening of the lower lying pelvic floor, stomach- and back muscles. All of this leads to a stabilization of the spine at its basis. A relieve of the inner organs is a convenient side effect. A better blood circulation encourages the metabolism process in the brain, which in turn improves concentration and attention.
